From the late twentieth century to today, Americans have lived in a fully modern public-finance system. Individual income taxes and payroll taxes have become the largest regular federal revenue sources, while corporate taxes, excise taxes, customs duties, and borrowing remain important parts of the broader picture. The system is now digital, highly administrative, and deeply woven into everyday life—from withholding and electronic filing to direct deposit of benefits and online budget data.
