After World War II, the United States entered a period of large-scale national growth and institutional expansion. By now, income and payroll taxes were familiar parts of everyday life. Federal revenue, together with state and local finance, supported highways, housing, research, education, defense, Medicare, and the institutions of a modern middle-class society. This is the era when many recognizable features of modern public life took visible shape.
