Washington, D.C. – May 1st, 2026
The Tax Project Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on Government Financial Literacy, open and transparent government, and citizen-facing tools that help Americans better understand how public money is raised, spent, and reported, announced a national partnership with America250, the national, nonpartisan organization working to engage every American in celebrating and commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The partnership will support America250’s national effort to educate, engage, and unite Americans around the nation’s founding, history, and future by helping citizens explore one of the most important and enduring civic questions in American life: how Americans fund and build the nation.
As part of the commemoration, Tax Project will develop educational materials, digital explainers, and public transparency tools that help Americans understand the history and modern role of public finance – from the taxes, tariffs, debt, and public investments that shaped the country’s founding and expansion to the government financial systems that fund national priorities today.
“America’s 250th anniversary is an opportunity to deepen public understanding of the systems that have shaped our nation’s growth and governance,” said Jen Condon, Executive Vice President at America250. “Tax Project’s focus on government financial literacy and citizen transparency will help make this milestone more accessible, informative, and meaningful for Americans across the country.”
“From the Boston Tea Party and the Whiskey Rebellion to the 16th Amendment, Social Security, infrastructure, national defense, and modern public spending, America’s story is deeply connected to how the nation raises and uses public funds,” said Theran Lee, Executive Director of Tax Project Institute. “We are honored to partner with America250 by helping citizens see that public finance is not just accounting – it is part of the American story.”
Through its America250 programming, Tax Project will create public-facing educational content that connects major moments in American history to the financial decisions behind them. Planned materials include short-form explainers, historical timelines, classroom-ready resources, civic education content, and interactive transparency tools that allow Americans to explore government revenue, spending, debt, and public outcomes in clear, accessible ways.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to civic learning, historical reflection, and public engagement. By making government finance easier to understand, Tax Project aims to help Americans participate more confidently in civic life and better understand the connection between public resources, public decisions, and national progress.

About America250
America250 is the national nonpartisan initiative working to engage every American in celebrating and commemorating the Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is spearheaded by the congressionally-appointed U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and its sole-supporting nonprofit organization, America250.org, Inc., together known as America250. This multi-year effort kicked off with America’s Invitation on July 4, 2023: a national public engagement campaign inviting all Americans to share their stories and their hopes and dreams for the future of this country. Leading up to July 4, 2026, America250 is working to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.
