Check Refund Status: Where to Find

How to Check Your IRS Tax Refund Status

After you file, the first question is usually simple: did the IRS get your return, and when is the refund coming?

The main tool for checking is the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tracker. The IRS says refund status is generally available 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, about 3 days after you e-file a prior-year return, and about 4 weeks after you file a paper return. [1]

What you need first

To use the IRS refund tracker, you need four things from your return:

If one of those entries does not match the return on file, the tool may not display your status. [1]

What makes the tracker useful is also what limits it. It does not give a full explanation of your return. It shows just three statuses:

  • Return Received
  • Refund Approved
  • Refund Sent

That is helpful, but those labels are narrower than many people assume. “Return Received” means the IRS has your return. It does not mean the refund has been approved. “Refund Approved” means the refund cleared IRS processing. “Refund Sent” means the IRS issued a payment, but your bank may still need time to post the deposit, or the check may still be in the mail. [2][3]

The IRS also says the tracker gives a personalized refund date only after your return has been processed and the refund has been approved. So if the tool only shows that the return was received, that does not necessarily mean something is wrong. It may simply mean your return is still moving through the normal process. [2]

As for timing, the IRS says a typical refund takes about 3 weeks from the date you e-filed, while a mailed return generally takes 6 weeks or more from the date the IRS receives it. That is why e-filing and direct deposit are usually the fastest route. [1][4]

If your refund is taking longer, the tool still may not tell you much beyond the status stage. The IRS says delays can happen when a return needs corrections or further review. In some cases, the return may be incomplete, affected by identity theft or fraud filters, or slowed by bank processing times, weekends, or holidays. If the IRS needs more information from you, the agency generally contacts you by mail. [3][5]

One other point matters: checking repeatedly will not help. The IRS says “Where’s My Refund?” is updated once a day, usually overnight, and it has the same status information IRS phone assistors can see. In other words, refreshing it all day will not show an updated status and will not move your refund along any faster. [3][6]

The practical takeaway is straightforward. Use the official IRS refund tracker, wait until your filing method has had enough time to show up in the system, and read the status. The tool is good at giving you a general idea of where your refund stands. [1][2]
